#FREE 20 Unofficial Rules of Songwriting #Audio + Music #Cliff Goldmacher

While there are technically no limits when it comes to songwriting, here are 20 “unofficial” rules that songwriters employ to make songs more engaging and memorable. And it’s not just commercial songwriters. These rules are used in many of the popular and GRAMMY-winning songs you hear today. In this course, Cliff Goldmacher reveals tips from the professional songwriter’s rulebook, starting with 10 rules about lyrics: staying conversational, using concrete details, and keeping your rhyme schemes the same in similar sections. He then discusses five rules for melodies, including why you should keep melodies simple, unique, and accessible, and how to make them more memorable with repetition. The last five rules tackle familiar song structures and tips for shortening sections of songs.

Instructor’s Welcome Note:

(xylophone music) – Hi, I’m Cliff Goldmacher, and welcome to 20 Unofficial Rules of Songwriting. In this course, I’m going to cover 20 of the many, many unofficial official rules of commercial songwriting. First, I’ll break down the rules into three categories: Lyric, Melody, and Song structure. Then, I’ll discuss some specific rules that you should keep in mind when writing songs for the commercial market. I’ll be using musical examples along the way, and as an added treat, I’ll also select a Grammy Award winning Song of the Year from one of the past 50 years to support each rule.
Finally, I’ll remind you that for every rule, there are exceptions. My only hope is that if you break a rule, you’re aware that you’re doing it, and you’ve got a good reason. Whether you’re new to songwriting, or a more experienced songwriter looking to refine your creative process, this course will provide some solid suggestions of things to keep in mind the next time you sit down to write. Let’s get going with 20 Unofficial Rules of Songwriting.
