Hi, I’m Curt Frye. Welcome to Up and Running with Public Data Sets. In this course, I will survey some of the publicly available data sets you can access using the World Wide Web. I’ll start with sites managed by the US Federal Government, including the Census Bureau, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Then I’ll move on to international organizations, showcasing data collections from the World Bank, Statistics Canada, and Eurostat.
Next, I’ll point out search engines and other data portals, including sites such as Quandl, the US Federal Government portal, data.gov, and language resources, such as Google’s Ngram site. Finally, I’ll provide a brief overview of importing data into Excel, visualizing your data by creating charts and analyzing data by creating pivot tables. I’m sure you’ll find that your time studying Up and Running with Public Data Sets will be time well spent.
