#FREE The Gigging Musician: Songwriting on the Road #Audio + Music #GarageBand

Writing songs while traveling is a great way for artists to stay productive away from the studio. With an iPad and inexpensive music apps, musicians can develop song ideas from anywhere, whenever the inspiration strikes. Watch author Garrick Chow and his band The Jellybricks write a song while on the road to a gig in New York City. Hit the road with with a touring band and see the tools they use to write, and watch the process of the song taking shape in real time. If you’re interested in the more technical side, Garrick will review the mics, cables, keyboards, and apps he uses to record on the road. Then, back at home, he jumps into GarageBand to demonstrate techniques for moving files between the iPad and Mac, as well as mixing and sharing the track. The course wraps up with a full band live performance of the new song in their rehearsal studio.

Instructor’s Welcome Note:

– Hi, I’m lynda.com author Garrick Chow. And this morning, my bandmates and I are loading up our van from here in our home base in Central Pennsylvania, and from there we’re gonna be hitting the road to New York City, where we have a couple of shows lined up. So we have several hours of driving ahead of us. And we’ve found over the years of doing this that, we’ve come up with some pretty great song ideas when we’re all stuck in a van together for hours at a time. Now in the past we might have jotted down some lyrics in a notebook, or maybe sung some melodies into a portable recorder, just to get the basic ideas down. But since the advent of the iPad, it’s become possible to really develop and experiment with the musical ideas, much like you might do at home, or in an actual recording studio.
So instead of having to worry about remembering your song ideas when you get back, with a couple of accessories, and some inexpensive apps, you can really explore your creative inspirations whenever they hit, wherever you happen to be. So over the next several movies, I’d like to show you some of the tips and techniques that my bandmates and I use in a van or in hotel rooms, to develop our songs when we’re on the move. So, welcome to The Gigging Musician: Songwriting on the Road.
